Bustan seeks Development Director
BUSTAN, an Israeli NGO that works on social and environmental issues in the Negev, particularly in the Bedouin community, is looking for a half-time Development Director. The candidate may be based anywhere in Israel, but must be willing to travel to Beersheva regularly (approximately once every two
weeks).

Key Responsibilities: overall design of fundraising strategy, in consultation with the Director; direct and manage all aspects of fundraising activitities, including: grantwriting, reporting, foundation research, small and large donors, events, and tracking donors; develop and enrich partnerships with organizations, foundations, and individuals who share BUSTAN’s vision for environmental justice in the Negev, while ensuring that staff in the field and local partners are the leading face of the organization; in consultation with Director and Deputy Director, develop annual budget; expand pool of donors (institutions and individuals) from within Israel; manage communication with donors, as well as volunteers and friends, abroad, including quarterly newsletter and online updates; other administrative and programmatic tasks as necessary.

Key Qualifications: BUSTAN is a small organization without a central office. The ideal candidate should have: initiative and be able to work flexibly and independently (required); mother tongue level English (required); good Hebrew (fluency strongly preferred); commitment to BUSTAN’s values (required); excellent writing skills; strong fundraising experience, including knowledge of relevant U.S.,
European and Israeli funders; strong organizational and interpersonal skills; ability and willingness to work with volunteers

World Bank seeks Team Leader, Red Sea – Dead Sea Water Conveyance Study Program. Environment and Social Assessment Study
Deadline soon!  The World Bank, which is conducting a multi-million dollar environment and social assessment study for the proposed Red-Dead canal is seeking a team leader.

Team Leader for the Environmental and Social Assessment Study

Key Responsibilities:
• Lead a comprehensive Environmental and Social Assessment that will review and assess the potential environmental and social impacts of the proposed Project at the regional and project specific level. It will include an assessment of potential positive and negative impacts, review alternatives to the proposed Project (including the “no action” or “without-Project” alternative,) and provide an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) that outlines measures to avoid or mitigate impacts, as well as provisions for monitoring.
• Integrate data from the feasibility study and data from four key sub studies (to be prepared by regional experts) in the Environmental and Social Assessment.
• Effectively manage a project team comprising a Deputy Team Leader and experts and consultants in the following fields: Water quality/limnology, SIA/socio-economics, Environmental Economics, Health, Safety and Security, Ecology (aquatic and terrestrial), Hydrogeology/Geology/Seismic, and Process specialists (hydropower and desalination).

Relevant qualifications and areas of expertise:
• Minimum 10 years professional experience managing interdisciplinary infrastructure projects and Environmental and Social Assessments.
• Familiarity with studies of equivalent size projects.
• A demonstrated ability to work with government officials, civil society organizations, Non Government Organizations, and the public at large.
• Proven track record on managing and coordinating a diverse group of professionals.
• Fluent in oral and written English.
• Experience in the region would be advantageous.

Zalul seeking an environmental education expert to develop coral reef and beach protection lesson plans for school children
Zalul is seeking an environmental education expert for a part time position developing coral reef and beach protection lesson plans for elementary, middle school, and high school aged students.  Initially, programs will focus specifically on the following three groups:  Grades 4 through 6, grades 7 and 8, and grades 9 to 12.  A series of nine lessons will be developed for each age group in Hebrew and Arabic – one lesson for each month of the school year.  The initial project will be for a one and a half year period, allowing 6 months for developing curricula and one year for the pilot program.
Job requirements:

-         Sound knowledge and understanding of environmental issues – ideally pertaining to marine biology.
-         Knowledge of environmental education objectives and methodologies
-         Experience in curriculum development
-         Experience in training, community facilitation and giving presentations
-         Good communication and interpersonal skills
-         Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
-         Ability to build networks, negotiate and work effectively in partnership with government and non-government agencies, schools, and communities.
-         Fluent Hebrew
-         Arabic/English preferred but not required

Arava Institute Internship - Assistant to the Director of Alumni Projects

Arava Institute Director’s Assistant Intern 2007- 2008
The Arava Institute is an interdisciplinary environmental research and educational center located at Kibbutz Ketura in Israel's southern Arava desert.  The director's assistant helps the Arava Institute director implement the day-to-day operations of the Institute.  Assistance includes fundraising, trip planning, human resource management, communications with the Board of Directors, media watch and writing press releases among other tasks.

The Institute will provide the intern with room (shared room with another intern or Institute student), full board, health insurance and laundry services.  In addition, the intern will receive a 1,500 NIS stipend per month.  The intern is responsible for providing their own cell phone and computer and pay for international travel.  The institute will reimburse the intern for cell phone expenses and all in-country travel.

Heschel Center looking for News Media Project coordinator
The Heschel Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership is looking for a coordinator for its News Media Project.  This project aims to promote the principles of sustainability through the print and broadcast media in Israel.  The position requires consistent contact with media outlets, organization of seminars for journalists, production of an annual Pratt prize for journalism, and development of new tools for communicating environmental issues to the meda.  Fluency in Hebrew and English are required, as is a degree in communications or similar discipline, or experience working with the media.  For more information see http://heschel.org.il/heshelphp/yozmot.php?cat=6 (Hebrew fonts required).

Program Associate Positions Available at the Arava Institute
Arava InstituteArava Institute seeking two Program Associates for the 2007-2008 academic year.

A Program Associate should be personable, charismatic and sensitive to a broad range of personality types, ethnicities and nationalities. The Program Associate is frequently the “face” of the Institute:  representing AIES by making announcements and leading student activities. Both Program Associates will periodically be asked to host guests and appear on panels. Program Associates may be asked to represent AIES at recruitment fairs in various areas of the country or accompany groups that are traveling to the Institute.


The two Program Associates differ somewhat in content. There is a Student Life Program Associate and an Academic Program Associate. Their responsibilities overlap but each also has areas of primary responsibility.  Generally, the Student Life PA’s responsibilities include residential life and field guide responsibilities.  The Academic PA’s special responsibilities are in the areas of course assistance, tutoring and administrative work.

Visiting Fellowship on Development Cooperation in Water Management in the Middle East
Not in Israel, but relevant nonetheless!

The Wolfensohn Center for Development at the Brookings Institution is accepting applications for the Wolfensohn Center Fellowship on Development Cooperation in Water Management in the Middle East.

This two-year fellowship is devoted to the study of water management in Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan
and Syria. The fellowship is open to nationals from these five countries, who may be affiliated with
institutions anywhere in the world. Applicants must hold a PhD in Economics, Development Studies,
Political Science, or a related field.

The goal of the fellowship is to foster cooperative research between academics from Israel and
neighboring States on national and regional approaches to water management in the hopes of fostering

"Bustan - Sustainable Community Action for Land & People" seeks Development Coordinator
The Development Coordinator is BUSTAN's key representative in the funding world. S/he engages in a combination of fundraising, writing, and public relations.

The BUSTAN Development Coordinator focuses on three main types of work:

1. Developing new partnerships with like-minded foundations and organizations for the benefit of Environmental Justice in the Negev Desert, extending and enriching existing relationships through quality reporting and proposal-writing (i.e. assuring diligent adherence to agreements made with funders).

2. Engaging in program development and strategic planning, with a deep concern for the needs of the most marginalized populations in Israel, a desire to understand the particular reality faced by Negev residents, a vision of the role of the Negev in the larger struggle for a just and sustainable homeland, and a passion for building BUSTAN as a force for change among the next generation living in Israel.

3. Communications/Advocacy work, including the facilitation of staff communication, careful and creative project documentation, and the translation of the accomplishments of BUSTAN and the needs of Negev residents (with an emphasis on Bedouin citizens) to any and all outside audiences (both interested and resistant audiences).

Arava Institute Research Intern 2007
The Research Intern will help the Director of Research at the Arava Institute implement daily tasks as well as strategic plans for the Institute's Research Programs. The Intern may have the possibility to work on the current programs: Transboundary/ Stream Restoration, Ambient Concentrations and Chemical Composition of Particulate Matter 2.5 across borders, the Center for Sustainable Agriculture, and The Center for Sustainable Energy.

The areas, in which assistance is required include:

-  Fundraising tasks and grant writing
-  Human Resource Management
-  Research and academic work including assistance in paper writing, editing, and reference citing
-  Representation of the Institute

The Intern's specific responsibilities will include:

-  Research
-  Email filtering and communication
-  Data entry
-  Filing
-  Logistics for research programs

The position is available on a rolling basis, starting in February 2007. 

Requirements for the position are:

We are looking for post-doc fellows, or senior faculty who will be appointed as visiting lecturers or visiting senior lecturers.

Are you planning a thesis/dissertation focusing on Israel?
The Israel Scholar Development Fund of the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise is pleased to offer awards to encourage students to pursue academic careers in fields related to the study of Israel. Awards will be available to undergraduates who have already been accepted to a graduate program, graduate students who have received master’s degrees in Middle East related fields who wish to pursue a doctorate and doctoral students who are writing dissertations related to Israel.

Each award will be for $15,000. The grants are renewable for up to five years based on the following benchmarks:

1. Undergraduates who are accepted into MA programs related to Israel (paid in the fall of entering the MA program).
2. Acceptance into a Ph.D. program (paid in the fall of entering the Ph.D. program).
3. Passage of comprehensive exams.
4. Approval of dissertation topic.
5. Grant for research in Israel after either presenting two conference papers or giving two public lectures.

DOROT FOUNDATION "SOCIAL CHANGE IN ISRAEL AWARDS"

The Dorot Social Change in Israel Awards will provide up to ten (10) $5,000 Awards to U.S. citizens who are undergraduates of any accredited U.S. college or university to work during Summer 2007 on projects promoting Progressive Social Change in Israel.

The Program is designed to offer maximum flexibility in order to accommodate the widest possible variety of interests and to tap the passion, creativity, resourcefulness and work ethic of undergraduates.  To apply, students must develop their own interests and then outline a project in collaboration with an Israel-based Mentor and a home campus Faculty Advisor.  If selected, the student’s completion of the project should qualify for academic credit at the home campus Faculty Advisor’s institution.

NEW ISRAEL FUND SOCIAL JUSTICE FELLOWSHIPS
Social Justice Fellowships

The New Israel Fund and SHATIL announce the availability of two 10-month stipend fellowships in Israel, each at an organization working to advance social justice and democracy in Israel . Each fellowship is designed to enable a talented and committed Jewish professional or recent graduate to spend a year contributing to social justice while experiencing Israel first-hand.

Each fellow will concentrate his/her fellowship in one of the following areas: safeguarding civil and human rights, pursuing environmental justice, promoting Jewish-Arab equality, advancing the status of women, fostering tolerance and religious pluralism, or bridging social and economic gaps. The fellow will intern 32 hours a week at an Israeli non-profit organization, and will be provided with a stipend of $12,000. Each fellowship begins in September-October 2007 (actual start date is flexible).

The fellows will receive ongoing support from a staff member at SHATIL. However, fellows are responsible for securing their own housing and health insurance.
