The mission of the Jewish Global Environmental Network (JGEN) is to develop partnerships and collaborative initiatives through which Jewish environmental leaders in Israel and around the world work together toward a sustainable future for Israel. JGEN was established in recognition that both environmentalists and Jews are part of global communities that benefit from cross-boundary interactions and collaboration. The urgent and acute environmental challenges faced by the state of Israel present a unique opportunity for leaders in environmental efforts around the world to meet and develop joint projects. The projects and seminar initiated in 2003 were the first steps in developing a community of high-level Israeli environmentalists and Jewish environmentalists from other countries, a community that is creating opportunities for environmental movements to learn from one another, and that will build individual and institutional bridges to help Israeli environmentalists build a sustainable future for Israel. The network seeks to include governmental, non-governmental, academic, and business leaders.
Partners
JGEN was initiated in 2005 by the Coalition on the Environment in Jewish Life (COEJL) in North America and the Heschel Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership in Israel, supported in part through a generous grant from the Nathan Cummings Foundation. JGEN is currently developed through the Heschel Center.
